ILLEGAL RESISTANCE ACTIVITY IN PRE-REVOLUTIONARY CONDITIONS
By Kevin Walsh
The topic of violent or otherwise illegal resistance activity is a sensitive one, and some political groups ban any kind of discussion of this topic, but this is an important issue, and it needs to be discussed frankly. Having praised such people as Muhammed Atta, Timothy McVeigh and James von Brunn, it would be hypocritical and foolish of me to say that illegal activity is never advisable in pre-revolutionary conditions. At the same time, only a fool would plan illegal activity over the internet, and giving specific instructions on how to engage in such activity also involves serious legal problems. I will therefore have to address the topic in a general manner, primarily concentrating on common hazards of such actions.
Whenever possible, illegal resistance activities should be done by only one person, hence the term "lone wolf." That perpetrator should reflect seriously on his or her suitability for such actions. Someone who has a history of making anti-government propaganda and participating openly in anti-government demonstrations is probably under some kind of government surveillance, and such a person will find it hard to engage in such activity without being observed. The perpetrator should also reflect seriously on what the consequences could be and on his willingness and ability to deal with the consequences. The perpetrator must understand the need for absolute secrecy both before and after the fact. Don't boast about your plans beforehand. Don't boast about your acts afterwards. Don't tell your wife, your children, or your closest friend. Certainly don't tell your political associates. Anyone you tell becomes a liability. Even if that person doesn't inform, that person may share some of the guilt with you as an accessory. It's a needless burden to put on other people. Remember that Michael Fortier went to prison just because he overheard the plans to bomb the Murrah Building and didn't report it to the authorities. If alcohol give you loose lips, stay away from it.
Beware of entering into any kind of conspiracy. Law enforcement officials excel at entrapment, and defense attorneys rarely succeed in acquittal on grounds of entrapment. Remember that Randy Weaver got into trouble because he allowed a government agent posing as a white patriot to persuade him to saw the barrel of a shotgun to an illegal length. Many "radical" organizations that preach organized violence are nothing but government fronts of mass entrapment. If you do enter into a conspiracy and you back out of it later, you can still be prosecuted for it even without the act occurring. That's not a hazard if you plan something alone. There are times when a conspiracy is necessary to accomplish an act of resistance. It would be difficult, for example, to imagine accomplishing the martyrdoms of September 2001 without several people working together. If it is necessary, be sure that the fewest possible people are involved, that everyone involved is capable of keeping a secret and carrying out the plan, and that everyone involved is trustworthy. Certainly do not enter into conspiracies with lumpen elements. These people seldom have any principles and will likely inform on everyone to save their own skins. Communication should be in person. Communication by telephone, internet, or mail can be traced, and use of code words can be represented to juries as anything the prosecution thinks is plausible.
If you are involved in illegal resistance activities, or even lawful anti-government activity, don't break the law needlessly. That only calls attention to yourself. Remember that Timothy McVeigh was caught because he was speeding.
Ideally, lone wolf resistance activities should be done by people who are in such dire straits that they have nothing or very little to lose. Those who have the resources to continue to lead their normal lives should usually concentrate on preparing for revolutionary conditions when they will have the support of the masses for organizing. In either case, remember to focus on the big picture rather than one's own immediate troubles.
